Magnesium is of the most important, yet most commonly deficient nutrients in our diet. It is a must in any treatment protocol for heart disease and its various symptoms. A 2004 research paper from the Journal of the American College of Nutrition summarizes its various known roles. It is needed for controlling the same cholesterol producing enzymes that common cholesterol lowering medications inhibit. This way it constitutes a natural cholesterol normalizing agent.
Magnesium assists in normalizing triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol. It role in preventing inflammation contributes to prevention of arterial plaque. Magnesium is muscle relaxant and as such is used to normalize heart beat in cases of irregular heart beat (arrhythmia).
Magnesium deficiency is more common that calcium deficiency. It is found in green leafy vegetables, peas, some beans, nuts and seeds. Replenishing magnesium levels by improving the diet is important but can be a slow process. In my Toronto naturopathic practice, I find that providing magnesium supplementation in the form of liquid ionic magnesium offers that fastest way to for recovery from magnesium deficiency, and to assist in treating the types of heart health issues I discussed here.
